Master of Science in Technology, Media & Society—ICTD Track



The Information and Communication Technology for Development track of ATLAS Institute’s MS in Technology, Media and Society is a two-year program that combines an interdisciplinary approach to international development with hands-on experience. The fourth semester practicum allows students to build real world projects through an internship with organizations working in the ICTD field. Practicums provide students with international experience and often lead to full-time positions.

The ICTD track of ATLAS’ MS in Technology, Media and Society prepares students to effectively leverage Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in underserved communities.

In order for ICT-based development interventions to succeed, technological considerations must be balanced with social, cultural, political and external issues. To this end, students take courses in technology, development studies, policy and fieldwork methods. Achieving a balance between technology and society is a central objective of this program.

The only one of its kind in the United States, this two-year program includes three semesters in residence and a final semester comprised of a field-based practicum, where students work with NGOs, development agencies, foundations and technology companies on real world ICTD interventions.

There is a demonstrated need for ICTD practitioners who can balance questions of access, use, usability, cultural context and unintended outcomes of ICT deployment and adoption in development strategies, in order to create and advocate for appropriate, sustainable and equitable technologies.

The MS-ICTD program seeks students from all academic backgrounds. The strength of the program depends on the diversity of its students, because a a broad mix of talents leads to more thoughtful and thorough development projects. We encourage technologists, social scientists, development practitioners and those who prefer not to be labelled to apply for the program. Our primary prerequisites are a passion for making a difference and a desire to expand the impact of ICT in disadvantaged communities.
